5 things to know about the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
1. Since 1992 victims of poverty are commemorated at international level.
26 years ago the United Nations established October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Nevertheless, the first demonstration of rejection of poverty was in 1987, when almost 100.000 people convened together in Paris, France, and around the Human Rights Memorial in Trocadero they honoured the victims of poverty, hunger and violence/abuse. That day priest Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World Movement, exposed a rock on which it is readable:
“Where men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, the human rights are violated. Be united/Stand with and watch over them to make these respected is our holy duty”.
Four years after the death of Wresinski, UN established October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
2. There are seeds of hope
October 17th represents the opportunity to convey together a strong message of hope and to allow the helpless’ voice to be heard. For this year UNO has chosen as topic “Unite with the most excluded people to build a world where human rights and dignity are universally respected”.

5. Why eradication of poverty is the first aim of Sustainable Development of UNO.
Nowadays 800 million people in the world live in extreme poverty. The number is high and is raising, even more if it is added to the number of people who are affected by worrying unemployment rates, inequity, lack of security, warfare and climate change effects.
It is located as the main purpose of Sustainable Development, as talking about poverty does not mean only talking about money, but even about lack of basic skills to live with dignity.
